COATES & SCARRY

Ariel Cabrera Montejo

We are excited to be returning to VOLTA NY with a solo presentation of oils, watercolours and drawings by Cuban artist Ariel Cabrera Montejo. Cabrera (b.1982) recreates theatrical scenarios inspired by Cuban historical periods like the Interwar Period (1879-1895) and the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898).

The subjects in Cabrera’s theatrical scenes have carnal, ludic and sensual desires. His imagined subjects and scenes depict anecdotal heroes and events from Cuban history. His subjects are less military and more human unlike the traditional figurative works from Cuba’s history where heroes are portrayed as solemn subjects on pedestals. Cabrera lives and works in New York City. Cabrera attended the Fine Arts Academy of Camaguey and the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) Havana in Cuba.
