Biography

An interaction between industrial architecture and physical space informs the drawings and paintings of Bronwen Sleigh. Using pencil, pen, gouache and collage, she explores real and imaginary architectural forms through the application of new perspectives. By bringing together detailed fragments of different buildings – staircases, windows and roofs, with electrical pylons and forms that are harder to pinpoint – she creates dynamic works that explore how three-dimensional space can be articulated via two-dimensional surfaces.

Taking influence from modernist architectural design of the early – mid-twentieth century, Sleigh proposes new ways of looking at the world around us from a contemporary patch-worked viewpoint. In particular, the artist’s works reference the constant development and demolition of the built environment familiar to many of us. 

Sleigh studied at the University of Wales, Cardiff and at Glasgow School of Art before going on to complete her MA in Fine Art Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, London. She has won multiple awards and has shown in the USA, Sweden, Canada, Finland, Japan, Portugal and across the UK, including at London’s Royal Academy seven times. Her works are held in such notable collections as the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Parliamentary Art Collection and the British Museum.
